We at Gluckstadt Family Dentistry are in love with dentistry. We’ve devoted our lives to the health and preservation of your smile, and we’re not the only ones. Since as far back as 12,000 B.C., humans have practiced various dental techniques. Here are some fun facts about how dentistry has evolved over the years:
-The first evidence of dentistry is that of an ancient infected tooth that was treated with flint medical tools in old-world Italy about 14,000 years ago.
-In 5000 BC, a Sumerian text described “tooth worms” as responsible for dental decay. This idea wasn’t proven wrong until the 1700s.
-The Chinese invented the first toothbrush in 1600 BC, made from pig hair and animal bone.
-In the Middle Ages, dentists were called “barbers” and were not only responsible for treating teeth but for aiding in medical practices as well as cutting hair.
-Paul Revere, who is famous for his epic ride through the night to warn Colonial troops that the British were coming, was also trained as a dentist by the first dentist to live in America, John Baker.
-In 1776, during the Battle of Breed’s Hill, Paul Revere identified his deceased friend by examining a bridge he constructed for him. This is the first documented case of post-mortem dental forensics.
-Until the 1880s, toothpaste was sold in powder or liquid form in boxes, bottles, jars and pots. The creation of the metal toothpaste tube revolutionized the toothpaste industry.
